Can you tell me how safe Brazil is for auto travel? I want to go there by car and to travel on my own terms and that wouldn’t be possible if I travel by train or by plane. But I’ve heard various unpleasant stories about how Brazil is very unsafe. What do you think? Do you have some experiences with it?

Well, I think that Brazil is not a particularly safe country. I don’t know anything precise to tell you about traveling through it by car, but I know about various cases of kidnapping in Rio. People a re advised to carry only small amounts of money so that they can have something to give to robbers if they ask, and still not to have all the money they brought with them. As for Brazil roads I really don’t think they’re much safer. I’m not saying that it’s like in Mad Max, but measures of safety are needed for sure. My advice is to either take a plane or to travel only along main roads and highways. Avoid shortcuts and don’t travel on your own.
