| Hallo everyone! Just came home after a lovely week in Budapest. I was delighted with the city, it is stunning and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a city break holiday. Food was fantastic, accommodation was at great rate, and the main city sights and attractions were worth seeing. However, I found out that lots of people dont speak even Basic English, so it would be really hard for me to rely on passers by in case I have had difficulties with getting around. For a tourist destination, it is strange not to have more English speakers, dont you think? Also, does anyone know why that is the case? |

| Hi there! Im gad you liked Budapest, it really is a nice city. On the other hand I disagree with your opinion about English level and number of its speakers among Hungarians. First of all, youngsters learn English in schools, and there is significant number of speaker of German, so you have just maybe bumped into older passers by. Also, I dont think one should rely on local peoples ability to speak English for getting around when he or she has possibility to get informed at tourist info points and tourist maps. That should be enough in most cases. If you get lost, you should simply ask more people for help, and watch your chances of finding your way increasing. In addition to that, one could learn few Hungarian phrases, or at least give it a try. Host people are always more willing to help if they notice your wish to learn their own language. |
