Anyone traveled from Melbourne to Sydney by train?

I will go to Melbourne this year, have some friends living there that I havent seen for quite some time. This is my first trip to Australia so I am planning to tour this land as much as possible. So I decided to maybe take a train from Melbourne to Sidney. I wonder if anyone has experienced this way of traveling. Opinions in order!

I dont think that train is a popular way of transportation in Australia. I must say I admire your optimistic thought to travel that long distance using the services of the Australian railway. I can only assure you that considering the stories I have heard, that could be an unpleasant and long ride. Their trains arent like Japanese ones, meaning pretty damn slow.
