In a week, I will be heading to a vacation in Mexico, from New York. It is my first visit, and since I will be traveling by car, I plan to visit almost every interesting tourist destination from Acapulco, to Conzumel and Cancun. Bearing in mind that it is my first trip to Mexico, by car, I am not really sure what to expect. So, I was wondering what papers I would need when crossing the border or while on my vacation there? Thanks in advance, Mark Hanson.

As I presume you are a citizen of United States of America, you should know that passport requirements are changing as we speak. Since you are traveling by land, you will not be needing passport until 2008, but at the entrance of Mexico you will be asked for identification - a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, as well as a driver's license or some other ID issued by a state. In order to get your car across the border, you will also need some documents, but since I always traveled by plane I am not sure which. But I heard some rumors, that American car insurance is not valid in every circumstance, so you should maybe consider buying Mexican car insurance.
