I always like when good people are trying to make life better for some underdeveloped part of the world. I heard that something is going on in the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia. The region is opening for many tourists and they should be careful in order to reap benefits from it while avoiding pitfalls. Is there something going on there?

There is a project, the Development of Cultural and Eco-tourism in the Mountainous Regions of Central Asia and the Himalayas, which is sponsored by the Norwegian Government and UNESCO Regular Program funds. Its main goal is to promote cooperation between tour agencies, local communities and various NGOs, to make sure that local population is fully involved in the employment opportunities as well as activities that make money and generate income. Tourism can be a blessing but also, it can destroy local cultural and environmental heritage and richness so they are trying to prevent the latter from happening in this region. There are also other projects for this region like Sustainable Land Use in Mountainous Regions of Southeast Asia.
