What requirements do I need for a visa to South Korea?

I was in Asia a few times in my life, but never in South Korea. This year I would really like to go there, even if only for a week. So, what I would like to know is what requirements I will need for a visa to South Korea. I know that it might be the best to inquire in the embassy, but I would like to hear it first from someone who went there.

I think that you won’t need visa if you plan to go there for your vacation only. As far as I can remember (my sister traveled to Korea last year), you can stay there for a whole month and you won’t be required to have visa, but if you plan to stay longer, then it is different.
