Where to go on a short Trip from Cairo?

I am going to Cairo in Egypt on business next week and will be staying there for five days. While it will be mostly meetings, I am hoping to be able to see a fair bit of the city's sights as well and perhaps I will even manage to make a day trip somewhere. Where could I go? I would very much appreciate any comments.

Did you know that Cairo is one of the most populous cities in the world? It is a huge, thriving, bubbly metropolis and you will have no need to go outside of the city's borders if you want to be impressed by great sights. You can book one of those evening tours if you don't have time during the day, and have yourself shown around by a local guide who knows all about Cairo.
