My fiancé and I are planning to visit Costa Rica in August. We know that temperatures and rainfall range in August—some years are cool and dry, others are rainy and hot and that the Pacific coast tends to have more rainy days than the Caribbean coast. We would like to know what to see and do in Costa Rica in August.

August is an unpredictable month in Costa Rica, when it comes to weather and influx of tourists. It is recommended to bring a poncho or a pocket umbrella, and waterproof your shoes, backpack, and luggage—but also to bring sunscreen and a bikini. There are two events going on in August. One of them is Virgin of Los Angeles, on August 2nd, when Costa Rica celebrates the appearance of La Negrita (the Black Virgin), with pilgrimage and religious processions, and the other one is Mother’s Day (Dia de la Madre), celebrated on August 15, also called Assumption Day.
