Can somebody please tell me if Sicily is a friendly place for gay people? I would so like to go there with my girlfriend for our anniversary. Both she and I find this place very attractive, and we would really like to visit all those interesting cultural and historical sights. But we wouldn’t like to feel unpleasant there. Any hints?

Well, although Sicily is very traditional and patriarchal society, you can even walk down the streets holding hands in some cities, feeling secure. But, do not expect you will be unnoticed, just tolerated, because you are tourist’s .In smaller towns and villages, I do not think you would like to do something like that, you would be causing unneeded attention that way. But you are quite safe in Catania for example, and even Taormina, even though it is a small town. But, this kind of behavior is tolerated only in tourists, there are very homophobic when it comes to their neighbors , friends and family.
