I had once exactly the same drive and it is not like you should be organizing this drive from Ghadames to Algeria by yourself for I won't suggest you ever rent a jeep and hit the desert road alone-you won't like the situations. Anyway while you are still there in Tripoli try to find some professional tour operator there for they are about to provide organized Sahara desert tours that are passing through Ghadames from Libya up to Algeria and the guides are just perfect-well experienced and it is amazing how many languages they speak-at least mine guide was talking English, French and Italian but he was also speaking with some Bedouins that are about to be met driving this tour up to Algeria. Anyway I enjoyed this trip I even had a Camilla ride and I first thought I could have a flight from Tripoli to Algeria. Anyway it takes about approximately 10 days reaching Algeria but it is not like having an authentic dessert experience for it is not like you will be dying from thrust I remember at some point we reached some lake on the Tunisia Algeria border and from that point up to Algeria there are many other towns such as Biskra and Setif where you have another stay at some lake also. Anyway all this drive from Ghadames to Algeria includes desert night camping which was the best part of it and though I haven't managed to have much sleep I still loved it.
