I will be going next week to Rio with some of my friends. We wanted to go there to prepare properly for fantastic carnival. We have never been there before, so we are a little worried whether it is completely safe to go there. We have heard about lots of incidents, so any opinion would be helpful.

You probably know that Brazil is generally poor country. Two major cities, Sao Paulo and Rio, are very densely populated, mostly from very poor people coming from smaller towns and villages. In Rio, there indeed are incidents with kidnapping and criminal overall. It is surely not the safest place you can go to. However, all the crime rates have slightly fallen, and it is usually the best way to stay safe is to strictly follow tourist routes, and not wander around the city alone. That means, without any friend who lives in Rio, since even you are going in group that does not have to mean anything. However, if you are going to carnival, which is the case, just follow the party, crowd, and you will have no problems.
