My wife and I are thinking about vacation in Costa Rica. We would go there with our two children and my sister. Still, we are not sure about safety in the area, and I need your opinion, based on experience if possible. Do you think it is a good idea? Thank you.

Why not? I went there with my girlfriend, without children though, and I felt safe. Of course, you should avoid suspicious places, red districts in the outskirts and so on, but thats all, usual precautions would do. Most of the crime in Costa Rica is about pick pocketing, and therefore you should not show your new camera, jewelry or big money bills in public. Also, you should avoid empty beaches because of sometimes unpredictable currents. However, we had no problems and this small country can offer wonderful natural scenery and lovely vacation at a reasonable cost. I would give it a chance.
