Any festivals in India?

I am planning to visit India in next year. I would like to go there during any festival that makes India very famous and unique country in the world. Is there someone who can tell me about festivals in India? Is there any that will take part soon? Thank you very much for time you spent to answer.

There are really many festivals. Most interesting in my opinion are: Lohri and Purnima in January, Vasant Panchami in February, Amavasya and mahavir Jayanti in April, Budha Jayanti in May, Rath Yatra in July Nag Panchami in August, Ganesh Chaturthi in September, Sharad Purnima in October, Guru Nanak Jayanti in November and Id in December.
