How secure is Rio de Janeiro

Hi. My boyfriend and I are thinking of travelling to Rio de Janeiro in the near future and having a real look round the place. It was his idea, and although it sounds really great to me as well, I am at the same time worried about the security in Rio de Janeiro. What do you think?

I think that common sense is your best friend in terms of personal safety and security, wherever in the world you decide to go to, and also if you choose to stay at home. Don't you out alone in dark areas, don't display expensive stuff, don't look too touristy or like an easy target. If you adhere to that, you will find Rio de Janeiro to be no more dangerous than your home town.
