I recently got a job offer in Germany and have two choices. I can either move with my family to Munich or to Berlin. I was wondering whether any of you can pass on any information or comment regarding these two cities regarding the practical aspects of city life. I am primarily interested in the quality of schools, transport and safety. Any kind of info that could help me decide will be invaluable to me.

Because I live in Germany, I think I can give you fairly accurate picture. My suggestion is that you go to Munich. First of all, it is safer than Berlin, although the crime is probably higher than official statistics says. Since you will move with a family, one advantage Munich has is the proximity of various tourist places, which is great for family outings. Concerning economy, it is much better than Berlin. The employment is higher, although prices are higher as well. Young people do like Berlin because it's cheap to live in, and a place with lots of parties. It is not the place for families, though. Schools are undoubtedly better in Munich. Public transport systems are equal, excellent in both towns. That is very important in Berlin, as the city is quite large and requires use of transport to be properly explored. Bottom line is, since you have a family, go to Munich. The city is very beautiful, and you will have no problem adapting.
