I have been invited to come over and spend a few weeks in Madrid this winter at my sister's. She's just been posted there at the British Embassy and is still in her "settling in" stage. The old girl doesn't even know yet what to wear ther in the winter. Would you enlighten me please?

But with pleasure, dear "English Lady"! First and foremost, long gloves are not worn any longer on the continent (which includes Spain) at formal occasions, not even at the royal palace unless of course it is for a formal dinner. The winter weather in madrid tends to be very pleasant, especially for us Britons! Sunnier and drier than over here, it will easily accomodate your lighter autumn clothing. During the day, sports jackets and skirts are worn in majority, especially in the "diplomatic world". Some medium weight dresses too. And something a little bit more formal for the evening occasions as it does tend to get cold as the sun sets.
