Where to stop between NYC and Niagara Falls?

My younger sister and I decided to borrow our father’s car and go on a week trip in our own arrangement. The only thing that we know is that we will spend some time in New York, and that we will go to Niagara Falls.
Since we will drive all the way, it would be great to hear about some good place to stop between NYC and the Falls.

My sister says that there are several great places to stop on the way to Niagara Falls, but she also says that Cazenovia and Cobleskill are definitely something you should not miss if you already have enough time for it. A few years ago she did more or less the same thing that you are about to do, and I still regret for not going with her.
