Where is best to stay in Barcelona?

I'm looking for a good, inexpensive hotel in Barcelona, with a somewhat central location. I don't want to be out in the boonies or have to travel too far on the metro. Also I don't want a hostel or hotel with bed and breakfast. I would like to get recommendation for some hotel you where in, because I dont believe sites that say all good stuff and not one bad at all! There is no perfect hotel!

I love Barcelona! Most visitors stay in or near the Ramblas or in the Gothic Quarter just to the east. This is a good base from where you can explore the city's sights by day including Gaudi's masterpiece, the unfinished Sagrada Famlia Cathedral, and Parc Gell in the north. Ok, one I could recommend, this is years ago when we went - 1996 to be exact - is the Hotel Astoria. It's really nice but very reasonable and very accessible to all of the sites and downtown Barcelona. Enjoy your trip!
