What is the water quality in Mexico?

Another couple of months and I will be travelling to Mexico with the family. I am sure it will be great, and we have booked into one of the nicer resorts along the Playa del Carmen. I have just a little question though. What is the water quality in Mexico? Can we drink tap water or do we need to buy bottles?

My advice to you would be to buy the bottled water, even if the authorities say that tap water is safe. The fact that it is "safe" doesn't also mean that it does any good for your health and that you might not get an upset stomach, which is the last thing you want while you are on holiday! Buying bottled water only adds a small amount to your overall costs and is well worth it!
