I always like to taste local drinks since they tell so much about the country, its natural resources and people. I know that it sounds strange but it is true. I am going to Niger and Chad next month and would like to try some of their local drinks. What is national drink in Niger?
Well, it is beer. Definitely. Nigerians like beer and their national pride in that area is called Beire Niger. The beer is not bad. I have had my share of beer around the world and the Nigerian beer is not the best but it is not bad definitely. Although, some people had complaints about the headache after drinking it, I didn’t feel anything. I think that they had too much of alcohol and the morning hangover usually comes with a headache!
There is another brand of beer produced there. It is a kind of franchise of French West-African Flag, I think. I heard that this one is being brewed in the same tank in which Beire Niger is being produced. The rumor has it that the only difference between them is in small variations of the malt put in the batches. Nevertheless, it also tastes good.
