I am about to set off on a trip to Istanbul, and I am really looking forward to it. Mind you, I don't want to totally max out my credit card during my stay there, so I have said to myself that I should used public transportation whenever I can. The tramway is the cheapest... but why is there only one line?
Because that one line satisfies the needs that the city has, perhaps? Or because the places that cannot be reached by train, can be reached by bus? Every city has its own way of solving transport needs, and while I do think al the buses are always packed, I have not had any major problems in Istanbul.
I had a really hard time in getting places using public transport and didn't get on the tram once. I think that it is very chaotic and unpleasant, but if you are a local I suppose you get used to it in the end. If I were you though, I would take taxis. They are not that expensive anyway.
