My wife and I are planning to spend a week of our vacation in Fort Lauderdale next month. But what confuses us a little is the fact that, after chatting with some of our friends, we got the impression that the car is necessary there. Rented or our own. Since we have planned to get there by bus, we would like the opinion on this, or advice from somebody who was there recently.

You havent specified if youre just planning to enjoy the sun and beaches, or you want to explore the place and see more of it.
The fact is that whatever your plans are, the car is not necessary. Because, if you just want to relax and go no further than beaches, you can get there even on foot.
But if you are not planning to stick there, or if you want to explore on your own, than there are taxis, even water taxis, and means of public transportation which you can use.
