Is International Driver's License necessary for Italy?

I have been planning to go on a holiday this summer. It seems to me that it is a good idea to go to Italy. It seems like a really good and attractive choice. However, as I have never been there before, and I am going by car, I would like to know if I need International Driver's License. Thanks in advance.
