I want to travel to Italy in my car but I dont know what kind of license I am supposed to obtain. I know that there is something like International Driving Permit, but Im not sure what exactly that is. Is my drivers license valid there? And what kind of documentation for a vehicle I must have in order to enter the country?

All I know is that theyre going to check your car to see the numbers on the chassis when entering the country and if its a stolen car, youre in a big mess. Also, I guess you should have your driving license and some kind of internationally verified license, which is probably the one youve mentioned in your question. Is this documentation for car something called green card or I am wrong? Anyway, I think it much more comfortable and safe to travel by plane or train. I once drove from Austria to Greece and that was the most exhausting experience of my life, not to mention all those bureaucratic complications with all the necessary licenses.
