... let's play: Predict the Race Times!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, your friend The Kid has another race this weekend. Refusing to bow down to illness, training-hampering surgery, and apathy, she's coming off of crapola training into THE BRONX HALF MARATHON!

But wait, there's more! Your friend monk is running this, too. So let's open up the window of the bookie shop and take some bets. Background:

elkid: this supah sassy but overall nice gal's last training run over 7M was actually at the Queens half marathon on 5/17. Since then she's had all kinds of crap fall her way, and this idiot insists on running the race because 1) she promised herself she would, and 2) she wants the Grand Prix patch, awarded to all who run 4 or 5 of the 5 borough races. For this race to count towards the patch, she just needs to finish in under 3 hours. Yes, you can see, it's all about the patch! PR for this distance was at Queens - 2:18. Supah slow, but dedicated.

monk: this supah hot but overall nice guy has speedwork, hills, and consistent training behind him. He's run through bottles being thrown at him, gunfights, you name it. This athlete insists on running the race because 1) the start line is 1M from his house and 2) he promised elkid beer afterwards and if he renegs on that she'll hunt him down and kill him. Monk is also in pursuit of the patch. PR for this distance was at the Brooklyn half in March '03 - 1:35, but his half last venture (Queens) was only a few seconds slower. Supah fast, but dedicated to supporting The Kid's slowness as she appears to be his good luck charm.

Place them bets ... the final winnah(s) will be announced on Monday 7/7.

Elkid: She will surprise herself with a 2:25, just a few minutes off of PR. All the rest will have done her good, but feeling kind of icky, along with wilting weather, will not make it a PR race.

Monk: 1:35 again. I don't know about his training, but I know the weather is supposed to be a deterrent.

Both elkid and monk will have a lot of beers.

Elkid: I am thinking sub 3 by about 5 minutes. Determination and desire for the patch will make her get the necessary time

Monk: How about 1:40 since it sounds like the weather might be rough!

Good luck to both of you.

Elkid :: 2:34 - lack of a solid base (I feel your pain kid cry) and the heat combine to make this race feel longer than 13.1 miles

Monk :: 1:41 - Heat and a slow start will play a big part in this time.

elkid: around 2:30- lack of training and the heat
monk: 1:33- Lots of hardwork and consistency including speedwork may cause him to drop a few minutes off his time but the heat may slow him down a bit, causing him to lose less time than he expects.

EARLY RESULTS! And our winners, ladies and gentlemen:

Floridaboiler for closest to elkid's time - 2:56 (yes, it was the patch!)
PH for monk's - 1:41 on the nose!
Sandy Cheeks for eerily predicting a few beers post race!
**Honorable mention for funniest entry, Mr. Po-Po. 2:20 indeed!

I was going to reward you with some money from the Get Elkid Rich Quick Fund, but no one has donated from RR so the coffers are empty. But thanks for playing! We have some lovely parting gifts, like Rice-A-Roni and Starkist Tuna!

Is this is the last of the 5 or is Staten Island in the fall part of this too, for the patch?

This was only the third. Manhattan is on 8/3, Staten Island on 10/14. Manhattan is the one I fear most, with the Triple H thread (heat, humidity, hills). SI's supposed to be hilly, too (I think every race in NYC is!) but it'll be cooler. Then the coveted patch is mine!

You can get the SI scoop from Sue in NYC if you haven't already, she lives there. I heard from her that it is pretty hilly but October is going to be much easier. I don't envy you running MH in August...yikers!!!! Shocked
