I will be coming to Hong Kong for a few days and then I am going to China, where I plan to stay for several months for business. Will I need, as an American, some kind of visa from Hong Kong, or not? If anyone can give me any suggestions, I would be grateful.

The things about Chinese visa are relatively complicated. If you are staying longer than six months, you will need a visa and a passport, which will have to be valid for at least six months after that visa expires. It also must have at least one blank page. Since you are going to work, you will need Business visa. Also, you can get a Z visa, for employment. If you are taking the latter, you will need documents from a Chinese Foreign Experts Bureau. Business visa usually lasts for 30 days, although you can apply for 90 days more. Best of luck with visa!

You will need a visa and a passport. Your passport must be valid for six months past your visa validity date and have at least one full page that is empty. There are several kinds of visas for China. Tourist and Business are the most common. Both come with single, double and multiple entry options. They are normally good for a 30 day stay, but you can request up to 90 days. You can also get work or student visas, such as Z Visa and X Visa. Z Visa is an employment visa and X Visa is a student visa.

Both require proper documents from a Chinese organization such a school, the Education Ministry and/or the Foreign Experts Bureau. Such documents can be obtained through the school at which you are going to teach or study. The best source for info is the Chinese embassy or consulate in your area. If you do not live close to one, you should visit their websites.
