Girlfriend and I intend to go to Canada/Niagara Falls from US by car. Do you know if we need passports for crossing the border between US and Canada? I think I have heard somewhere that birth certificates only would do the job, however, I think we better make sure it really is so.

If you are going to go by car, and you are citizens of the US, your driving license and any proof of citizenship would be enough, since land borders rules are the same as before. Birth certificate is ok, as is certificate of naturalization. If any of you is younger then eighteen you should check if those rules apply to you, but generally speaking you need a valid photo ID document and something to prove that you are an US citizen. It doesnt have to be passport.
