I often hear people saying in jest "and Italian trains will run on time"... Knowing the Italian temperament I can see this is a joke! Like saying - "As rare as a hen's teeth"! Am I right? Do Italian trains run on time? Have they ever? I wonder what kind of answers I will get!?!
As a matter of fact Italian trains are often very approximately on time! This has to do with the temperament of the people running and using them. I am sure you can understand that. Yet there have been times they have been running on time. Mussolini for one succeeded in getting them to do so. That it took a fascist dictatorship to achieve it is by the by! Today, in the Italians' keen drive to be worthy members of the EU, trains are increasingly punctual.
