Im an amateur archeologist and since Im going to Israel this summer to spend my vacation, Id like to pursue my hobby there. What archaeological digs are there? Do I need some kind of license or something like that in order to be allowed to participate in excavations? Is there a possibility to volunteer and where can I apply for that?
Israel is very rich in archaeological sites. You can choose the site which is near the location youre going to be staying at. If youre going to be in Jerusalem, there are numerous sites. For example, burial sites and tombs that can be found in the hills around the city. Then, Herodian Street that is located near the Western Wall (you probably know it by the name of the Wailing Wall). Another site is located south of the Old City. In the ancient times there was located The City of David. Im sure that you will be allowed to volunteer. You can browse on the net and find some archaeological societies and ask them what necessary procedure for applying is.
